She rolls her eyes. He's stubborn and she doesn't want that to be why he gets his sorry ass killed by his 'personal guard.' "Is that the reason or is it because I look like her and you don't want to see her get hurt again?"
He goes still, she just had to point out the elephant in the room. Now he can't ignore it as much as he'd like to.
"There are several reasons." His voice is subdued, as if he's trying to convince himself as much as he's trying to convince her. He could bullshit a whole slew of other reasons but it would always come back to the fact that she was a near perfect replica of Allison.
"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't talk to that callsign you're working with to become your personal guard. A reason that doesn't involve who I look like." If he could give her just one, then she'd drop it. Otherwise, it might be worth looking into.
"Yes, and spending time with you won't do the same," she replies with a snort. More and more she wonders if a tense relationship is all she'll be able to have with the other agents.
"It'd be better than you winding up dead in the middle of the night because they decided you're no longer useful." Her eating has slowed, too. He makes things far more complicated than they need to be.
"This would be easier if you were at least living with me again."
"Good. I can deal with Church if you decide to move." Church is the only one she's concerned with since he made a point of mentioning how he did not want to live with the Director, but it isn't like the two would ever run into each other. Not with the schedule the older man kept.
When her beer glass is empty, she declines the wait staff's offer to refill it. She knows he didn't ask her, but she attempt to not drink in front of him in the future unless he's partaking.
There was another reason to avoid sharing a roof with her. She calls him Church now, not Alpha. He can only imagine that Alpha resembles himself as she resembles Allison... it's not something he wants to see.
She pokes at her food idly, eating a bite every so often, before slipping into a more familiar conversation topic. "You have bought more than granola bars and coffee for your new place, right?"
She'll appreciate that since she plans on paying once more. Her plate isn't looking much better than his, though she's still picking at the food.
"I wasn't letting Carolina walk out of there unless I did," she replies casually. She isn't sure how much contact Carolina and the Director have with one another, but if he sees the other woman he's bound to find out.
She shakes her head at his response. It's not surprising and she keeps her tone cool and collected. "We've been trying to fight since the Project. I'm more surprised it hasn't happened sooner."
"I expect more from the both of you than petty feuding." The tone of his voice goes icy with anger. Rivalry yes, you were supposed to push each other into becoming better, not to pick senseless fights.
He'd had to waste far too much time keeping you two from going after one another back in the Program, he's not going do it again here!
"Who the hell said it was petty?" she snaps. Her knuckles are going white from the grip she now has on her fork. "We're not a couple of children squabbling over the last cookie."
Her hair stands on ends at the use of her old designation. He had long since forgone it in favor of her new codename, Texas, and the reversion to it did not go amiss.
"It's none of your damn business," she snarls. "She's not a child anymore and she's fine, so good of you to fucking ask."
That particular shot strikes home and this time his voice is raised... still not to the level of a shout, but then it doesn't have to be.
"Neither of you are children, yet you insist on acting like one! You might as well be pulling each others pigtails and blaming the other for starting it!"
"You're the one getting fucking pissy over the whole thing! We're both fine with it." There's a sharp edge to her voice and if looks could kill, she'd be finishing dinner with a corpse. "You had us at the top of the fucking board and we never sparred once because you were too scared to see us hurt."

"You don't want to strain your relationship with the others any further than it already is." Yes, that seems reasonable, he can work with that.

He goes back to poking at his food... not really interested in eating any more but not wanting to look like he's just stopped eating.

Retreating back to this subject is oddly comfortable after the awkwardness before it.

As far as he's concerned you are both acting like spoiled willful children. What could possibly justify trying to beat the shit out of each other!

How dare she! It's not her place to question his decision to disallow their sparring or pontificate as to why!
